American Flat Track Springfield TT

It all started last September when my new friend JD Beach (MotoAmerica road racer) said, "Want to come try some flat track?"  It sounded like a good time to me so I said "Sure!"

Fast forward a few months and after a little persuasion from JD, I signed up to race the Springfield TT last weekend.  I'd only ridden flat track six times since September but I figured why not?  Might as well see what if I can do this.

Practice was cool.  I was having a blast out there, learning something new every single lap.  When I came off the track after the last practice, JD was standing there holding his phone out to me showing me I qualified fastest!  Total surprise to me, since I was up against all the top dudes in flat track.  TT racing is unique in flat track because it has a right turn and a jump, but both of those helped me as a moto guy.  What I lost in the normal left hand sweepers that flat track is known for, I made up in the brake zone before and through the right hand hairpin.

I pulled a bonehead move in my heat race, lining up first as fastest qualifier but then jumping the light!  I had to start dead last but worked my way through the heat race and semi qualifier, putting myself into the main.  I got out to a great start in the main and was up to fifth before sliding out in turn one.  I got up last but came back to tenth by the end.

Pretty bummed I fell down in the main, because I felt like I could have got on the podium, but I'm still happy with the way the race went for the experience I had coming in.  Flat track is SO MUCH FUN.  I can't wait to do my next one in Sturgis in August!

You can watch highlights of the Springfield race this Saturday at 5pm eastern on NBC Sports Network.  Thanks for reading!
